Passing Airport Security With Film: Avoiding X-rays and Getting a Hand Check (Best-Working Advice)
Putting together all my experiences of flying with film, this is a video with the best-working advice for passing airport security and avoiding X-rays. Mind that, the old X-ray scanners can damage your film starting from 400ISO, and CT scanners are damaging to all film, regardless of sensitivity. Being informed and prepared is the best we can do.

Travel With Film: Are Airport Security X-Ray and CT Scanners Safe? The ULTIMATE Test!
Просмотров 58 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Do airport security scanners damage film? Is it true, that X-ray scanners are safe for films up to 1600ISO? The new CT (computer tomography) security scanners - do they ruin film at any ISO? Is 35mm film safer to take through scanners than 120? Do X-ray protective bags work? Should we insist on hand-checking, or stop being paranoid? With this video, I am trying to answer those questions, to hav...

Double exposures are beautiful and surreal, and in this video we are learning how to make a print from two medium format negatives, using only one enlarger. The method I am using is not the simplest one, but it allows greater control over printing results. If you have two enlargers, it will be extra easy! I am explaining how I did the double exposures of my previous works, and sharing the dodgi...
Grain Types: Tabular, Cubic, Core/Shell - Choosing B&W Film
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 года назад
There are two general types of film emulsions in terms of crystal shape: classical grain emulsions and modern tabular-grain emulsions. Both types can be either regular crystals or core-shell. Among B&W films, only Ilford Delta 100/400/3200, Fuji Neopan Acros 100 and Fomapan 200 are tabular-grain, all others being classical. In this video, we will look at the different grain types, how they work...

LHR sucks I had no choice 20 rolls at risk !
You can 3D print a cover for the sous vide to block the light from the display or put an empty photo paper bag over it.
and here i thought the unusual green color cast was from my underexposed fuji 400 turns out it got cooked in the scanners.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I love you.
I like it! Already thinking about how I can do this to make gifts for people.
This is an INCREDIBLE TEST! Thank you. My question is: When the film travels from the factory to retailers in other continents all over the world, isn’t it scanned for security in customs anyway? Thanks again!
Hi Lina, Recently I started to print on fiber based paper from Ilford but I run into problems with drying and getting the photos really flat so I can frame and mat them in a nice way. After washing I put them between two drying papers for a few days under a pile of books but at the end they still are slightly curled at the edges and in the middle and not flat. Can I ask you what you recommend on how to flatten fiber based prints? As this is the first time I place a reaction on your channel I would like to thank you for all the very instructive and informative videos - they are almost a master darkroom class on their own!!!! All very much appreciated!!! Very best regards Dirk
I appreciate all the work you put in so we could have a clear answer :)
Amazing video!!
Barcelona didn’t care at all and passed it through the x -ray. France was fine and Canada as well.
Lina chocolate brand logo shirt?
yep, Soviet chocolate :)
You got the spectral sensitivity of Foma 200 wrong. Your figure says that it's the same as Foma 100, but it's not. Look up the technical data sheet and you'll find that the three Foma B&W films all have different graphs, and in fact, Foma 200 has the widest sensitivity of the Foma films, going slightly into the infrared.
잘 보고있습니다...작업량이 어마어마하시네요!
so is it safe to say or assume, that it is best to get the films developed at the current country/city you are in or visiting? ...and do i have to buy the film there too or does that not matter?
Cheers for this, Lina. I will make sure to share your helpful website.
I am going to start saving up now
Big ups for doing this experiment!
Experience so far: Japan and Abu dabi, no question. Athens and Milan hard refusal of hand scan. Fighting to tears with the security staff even in their local language.
What’s the latest on the new Widelux, Lina?
Any black plastic box will help protect the film in it cannister. An old VHS tape cannister, if you can find a black one would help. It's the carbon in the black plastic that helps.
Against old X-ray scanners, definitely. With the new CT scanners it is most likely not sufficient. Even two layers of lead+steel did not protect the film fully :(
This is awesome! Thank you!
Great video!
As a new amateur photographer that uses polaroid film I greatly appreciate these types of videos. Thank you for all your work! :)
As a new amateur photographer that uses polaroid film I greatly appreciate these types of videos. Thank you for all your work! :)
Excellent advice! I tossed two boxes of Delta3200 between my APX100 and FP4 in my zip bag and you know what? It was the only and last argument that made the security agent agree with a hand scan! (Brussels). Now I just have to get back through Keflavik’s security next week, I’ll keep you updated!
Interesting experience ! So it means they even manually check all the films you were carrying and not only the delta 3200 ? For all I know, they sometimes check only the high sensitive films and the rest of the films must go through the x-ray.
@@raphaeliacone8774 indeed! Maybe it helped that I packed all the films tightly in a transparent bag so my package looked nice and begged for careful treatment 😁
Or just buy film on location if you are traveling to a big city. Yea I still have one roll of iso 200 film wth me
Do you find that the set of available step sizes (1/12-1/6-1/3/1/2) is limiting? I'd imagine that between 1/3 and 1/6 there's too much difference. Say on a 30 seconds exposure, it's 4.8 seconds or 10 seconds. Just wondering.
Amazing story! So cool!
thank you!
Brilliant ❤
Handchecking in us was always easy, not in Copenhagen for example... I normally buy film on site and let it develop on site and in the worst case they ship it after developing to your home. If you are all out of options and you shoot medium format film: I got a good suggestion from a New York film lab (lusterphoto), they told me to just put it in your pocket and go with it through the metal detector. I did that back then and everything was fine.
Do you mind me asking what film you used? I want to bring porta 400 and I have no idea if it’s metal or not 😢
@@aylinzuazo5828 I think all medium format film is rolled on plastic rolls.
Don't hate, but I preferred the previous print. You accomplished your goal, just a bit too deeply.
I did this video super long ago, while still at uni. I was trying to get everything too perfect and sometimes overdid it. I'm much easier on all the techniques right now :)
@@linabessonova Hey, no, its art and open to opinion, none wrong none right...Trying to get perfect isn't bad..thx
I got GREAT results using 120 size Rollei Superpan 200 film (shot at ISO200) with 9mins @ 21deg First Development time. I highly recommend this kit, it makes the process easy. The Superpan film is super-panchromatic so I used an IR cut off filter (cutting out IR) because I prefer the look of this.
Thank you very much for all the work you put into this, Lina. Great material.
Amazing effort. Thank you and well done.
One of the most important videos on YT for photographers!!! Thank you!
Sehr beeindruckend. Insbesondere wie Ihr am Schluß über Eure Passion sprecht. Das klingt sehr authentisch.
Add Manchester airport to the no hand inspection list although it was xray she used and not the ct. thankfully i got my domke bag just in time so hopefully not too much damage

Holy moly this video is a product of film love. Great job!!! THANK YOU!!!
Amazing video! Thank you for all the effort and the fieldwork to get it done! I started shooting film last year after buying an old camera, and I had a 35mm Portra 400 traveling with me to many countries between August and January. The results were obviously awful: completely foggy. Ans I kept wondering what I had done wrong. Now it makes sense
Ooh this could be a lead to health safety documentaries!
Dear Mrs. Besssonova. For my last flight I have taken a Geiger counter on board. When on the airport the count on a display was something like 0,15. When we reached 35000ft or above the count was 2,20 -> so some 20 times higher. I just wander if that could be the reason for film problems for high ISO films? What do you think?
Dear Darek, coincidentally, I also took a Geiger counter on board - and also was quite impressed by the high radiation in the air! I took an 800ISO film and flew 11 hours to Korea and back - so 22 in total. I have a reference roll at home, so I'm very curious to see if there is a difference!
I put them in the lead bag and I never had issues.
If you pass through a CT scanner, quite unfortunately, the bag wont help 100%
your doing gods work fr
Suscribed! AMAZING Video. Does it change any result if you pass through the X ray scanner and THEN take the photos insead? Or is it the same?
thank you for the support! It doesn't change. I tried both ways, and no significant difference :(
Hy! I‘ve been to New York last week and travelled with lots of film gear including lots of film stock. Here is my experience: In Austria at the VIA you have no chance to get your film trough the security check without having it scanned if it is rated below ISO 1600. I had some Delta 3200 in my film bag and they told me that they have the explicit order to pic out every film under ISO 1600 and put it through the scanner. So just my Delta 3200 got hand checked in Vienna. It was the opposite in NY at JFK Airport. The TSA was very kind and hand checked without any discussion. So 5 Stars for the JFK, 3 for the VIA (only because they were also very polite and friendly)
Thanks for your video and your advices ! Regarding the x-ray machines, I often read that the employee can raise the intensity in order to see through a lead bag. But some others say that's not possible to do it. What's your opinion about it and with a CT scanner, can an emloyee raise the intensity ?
This is fine for hand baggage but what about checked bags? Do they undergo the same scanning?
